課程目標
課程教學目標:
The purpose of this course is to develop the analytical modeling skill to derive closed-form solutions for certain mechanics problems. The modeling results can be used to identify the key parameters in controlling materials properties/performance and to provide guidelines in the material design. Mastering this skill, students can publish theoretical papers on mechanics of materials with ease.
 
課程要求
The fundamentals of mechanics of materials will be reviewed. Special topics on the application of mechanics to model stresses in film/substrate, multilayer, and composite systems will be discussed. The physical meaning of the techniques used in solving the mechanics problems will be explored. Students will be asked to perform literature survey on topics of their interest, deliver oral presentations, read assigned reading, and participate in discussions. For the final report, students are free to choose their own topics and are encouraged to apply mechanics to solve the related problems in their own research projects. Qualified ones will be edited and submitted to an ISI journal.
